A tattoo is a permanent marking made by inserting ink into the layers of skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons. Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding.
Tattooing has been practiced worldwide. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, traditionally wore facial tattoos. Today one can find Berbers of Tamazgha and Maori of New Zealand with facial tattoos. Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples and among certain tribal groups in the Philippines, Borneo, Mentawai Islands, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia, New Zealand and Micronesia. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular in many parts of the world.Tribal tattoos

Hooting Stars
A veritable raft of reader submissions today (well, 4, but its a record).
First is a fantastic full backpiece owl from Paulo Coruja, by Gu Tattoo, Tattoo You Studio, São Paulo, Brazil.
Next, Rae Fleming sent in this cute owl.
Paul sent us this owl-tline, can't wait to see finished article.
...aaaand then last but not least is this literary owl, submitted by Mattson Zust. It is "the owl who was god" illustration from "the thurber carnival".

Mmm, niffy!
This is a great tattoo, but I suppose If I had to have one of Jem, I'd have a random set of buttocks farting in her face too. Good work Steve Monie!

Eat Your Hoot Out
And now for something a bit different...
I got a great email from Kevin Dunn, creative director of 530medialab, who writes, 'Early this year my company hired tattoo artist Juan Puente from Spotlight Tattoo in Los Angeles to come in and tattoo our companies owl logo on anyone that was brave enough to get one. Here are pics from that night, thought you might be into it.'
Superb stuff, thanks Kevin!
